Walking amongst giants. A moment in Redwoods - Whakarewarewa's Forest

The Redwoods stand as gentle giants

I’ve always believed that New Zealand has its share of unforgettable scenery. Yet, nothing could have prepared me for The Redwoods at Whakarewarewa Forest. The towering Redwoods stood like ancient guardians, their massive trunks and outstretched branches creating a natural cathedral that whispered of forgotten times.

I had never been to Whakarewarewa Forest before but had heard about its Californian Coast Redwoods, this trip was one I was looking forward to.

As we, my wife and I, stepped beneath the branches of the Red Walk, we were immediately wrapped in a gentle, almost otherworldly feeling. We felt like we had wandered into a fairy tale, a magical forest wonderland where every ray of light held a secret.

Walking amongst the Redwoods, we felt both small and incredibly awed

The trees soared above us, some reaching heights of 100 metres. Straight and majestic, their trunks were like columns of wood. At that moment, I half-expected elves to dart between the trees, much like in the world of Lord of the Rings. The forest was alive with mystery and quiet power, a reminder that nature holds magic beyond our wildest dreams.

Every step on the soft, leaf-carpeted ground filled me with a child-like sense of wonder. The interplay of light and shadow danced around me, creating pockets of brilliance and dark corners full of secrets waiting to be discovered. I could almost hear whispers of ancient tales in the rustling leaves. For a brief moment, I was no longer just a visitor—I felt like a part of this enchanted realm.

The experience was both humbling and exhilarating. In the presence of such grandeur, it was impossible not to reflect on our place in the world. The redwoods stood as gentle giants, silently teaching me that nature’s most profound lessons are sometimes found in its quiet moments. When I left the forest that day, I carried the memory of light, magic, and a sense of wonder that I hope will stay with me forever.

It was a simple day trip, but it transformed into an adventure that felt like a story straight out of a fairytale. One where the redwoods and the soft, enchanting light played the starring roles.

In addition to the magic of that day, I learned a few interesting facts about these incredible trees. The redwoods, known as Californian Coast Redwoods, are among the tallest trees on Earth. In their native lands, they can reach heights well over 100 metres and live for centuries—even thousands of years. Here in Whakarewarewa’s Forest, they’ve adapted well to our cool, moist climate, standing as a living reminder of nature’s enduring strength.

I also discovered that the thick bark of these trees acts like a natural shield. It protects them from fire and pests, making them even more resilient. Although their roots don’t burrow deep, they spread wide to keep the trees steady during strong winds. Walking among these giants, I couldn’t help but feel that their strength and calm put my everyday worries into perspective.

The forest itself is a treasure. Its winding paths and the soft interplay of light and shadow create a scene that changes with every step, almost like a living painting. Whether you’re a seasoned nature lover or just looking for a peaceful escape, Whakarewarewa’s Forest offers a quiet magic that invites you to pause and appreciate the wonder of the natural world.
