The Skifield’s location means storms deliver powder here when no other ski hills get it. Mt Lyford’s eastern aspect ensures plenty of snowfalls, especially when a storm hits.
Mount Lyford is one of the first lifted ski areas in New Zealand, but it is still family-owned and operated. The highest point, Mt Terako, has the best views of any lifted ski area in NZ, and the ski field remains relatively uncrowded.

The road up to Mount Lyford is a well-maintained gravel road that passes through native Beach Forest and into alpine terrain. It is an 8km long drive from the Mount Lyford Lodge to Lake Stella, passing through the lower two areas at Mount Lyford. You can easily access ‘The Terako Basin’ and the Skifield.
